The album art for WEMA is a monochrome headshot of a crying african boy toddler. This imagery represents the essense of the song as MAWAT addresses his unhappiness towards the Hip-Hop genre. The boy crying represents MAWAT's cry to mother Hip-Hop, how she (Hip-Hop) has changed from being an art-form of self-expression, a voice of African youth culture, and a liberation tool that empowered the young black and gifted mind; into being a derigatory vehicle, used to promote profane language, objectify women and elevate a thugging, drugging, boozing and sexually promiscuous lifestyle.
The song breaks out with a loud repetitive cry in the hook: WEMA! WEMA! (directly translated as HEY MA, and a double on entendre of the Zulu saying "We Mame" which means "shame"). By the time we get to the first verse we already much know to expect rebuke. When the first verse hits, one can clearly hear (through the the lyrics) that Mawat is venting and addressing what these "so called rappers" are doing to the game and teaching the youth. On the final bar of the verse, he re-establishes his faith, Christianity and addresses the blasphemous Reazus Cover (i.e. Rapper Reason's controversial cover which dropped late 2015). Mawat then confesses that Jesus Christ is the savior of his life.
The second verse is more Hip-Hop savvy in that it consist of a killer rhyme scheme. In this verse, Mawat also touches on political deception. Overall this is the sound Africa particularly knows Mawat for. Uptempo, in your face baseline and an insane energy when it comes to the choruses. No doubt, WEMA is the cross-over song Which will finally introduce Mawat to a new audience ie. the circular market. With a high budget music video planned to hit the small screens end-March, a mega-marketing drive in-place to sell gold in one day, and with WEMA already being a crowd's favourate during MAWAT's performances, one can rest assured that BLESSED will be the biggest Gospel-Rap release in the history of Mzansi.
Proverb 18 verse 21 reads, "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit." The #RoadToBlessed has indeed begun.
And the Mawatans said "Amen!".
